Sunday 2nd July at Parkside sports
centre saw the convergence of over 100 hopeful Maradonas and Shiltons
in the chase for the title of SKLP 5 a side champions. Not only
was the team turnout outstanding, an impressive number of supports
also attended to make the tournament a huge success.
After about an hour of setting up and team practising the action
got underway. The over 16 matches started of with Bendev playing
Baladia Youth Club A who’s goal keeper not only gave a commendable
performance throughout the competition but also managed to entertain
the spectators. The game however, although comprising of skill ended
in a disappointed draw.
Last years champions Multiglaze got their campaign underway by
ending the drought of goals encountered in the first few games of
the tournament. The provided a display of ruthless efficiency beating
newcomers Desert Raiders by 8 goals to nil.
Meanwhile across the turf the under 16s were also beavering away
motivated by the glory of the finals at Willesden projected in their
mind.
Following the break for lunch the under 16s tournament was growing
to a desperate battle for qualification between 3 teams in group
2; Bendev, BYC (A), and Madhapur Youth Assoc. M.Y.A who were new
to the competition were certainly one of the teams who made an impact
on their debut. They had a place in the semi-finals resting on their
last match against Bendev. Wining would have meant Bendev failing
to qualify. However this was not to be their year. Bendev managed
to hold them to a goalless draw and so went to qualify at the expense
of this brave new side.
Group 2 finally saw Bendev together with BYC go to Willesden for
a place in the semi-finals. The Kingsbury Construction boys who
provided a consistent performance throughout the tournament managed
to fight of their rivals and claim a place in the semi-finals together
with Multiglaze who ended the day leading group 1 with a comfortable
margin and without conceding any goals.
